Automotive Repair Shops
How auto repair shops use JobLine to track vehicle repairs, manage bays, and hand off between shifts.
Why JobLine for Auto Repair?
Automotive repair shops juggle multiple vehicles across several bays, each at a different stage of diagnosis, parts ordering, or repair. JobLine replaces whiteboards and sticky notes with a digital system that tracks every vehicle from intake to delivery — so no job falls through the cracks between shifts.
Setting Up Your Shop
Create stations for each bay (Bay 1, Bay 2, etc.) plus stations for Diagnostics, Parts Counter, and Customer Pickup. Each bay maps to a physical lift or workspace. Operators check in to their assigned bay at shift start, just like clocking into a machine in a CNC shop.
Work Orders as Repair Orders
Each vehicle gets a work order with the customer name, VIN, and complaint description as the part number and notes fields. Routing steps map to the repair flow: Intake → Diagnostics → Parts Ordering → Repair → Quality Check → Customer Pickup. Supervisors can see every vehicle's status at a glance on the Kanban board.
Shift Handoff Notes
When first shift ends, the outgoing tech documents what was completed, what's still in progress, and any parts on order. They can attach photos of damage, worn components, or diagnostic screenshots. The incoming tech sees exactly where each vehicle stands — no guessing, no re-diagnosis, no wasted time.
Sample Routing: Brake Job
A typical brake repair routes through: 1) Intake (customer drops off vehicle, advisor creates RO) → 2) Diagnostics (measure rotor thickness, check caliper slides) → 3) Parts (order rotors and pads if not in stock) → 4) Repair Bay (remove old, install new, bleed lines) → 5) Quality Check (test drive, verify no noise or pull) → 6) Customer Pickup (final invoice, keys returned). Each step logs who did it, when, and any notes.
Tracking Quality & Comebacks
If a customer returns with the same complaint, file an NCR (Non-Conformance Report) linked to the original repair order. This tracks comeback rates by technician and repair type, helping you identify training needs or recurring part failures. Over time, your quality dashboard reveals patterns that save money and protect your reputation.
