    4140 Overview

4140 is common in shafts, fixtures, and high-strength machine components. Pre-hard stock requires lower cutting speeds than annealed stock.

    Typical carbide guidance

    • Annealed: 300 to 500 SFM
    • Pre-hard around 30 HRC: 200 to 350 SFM

Reduce speed further when rigidity or tool overhang is poor.
